10 Mistakes Couples Make When Planning a Florida Wedding

Planning a Florida Wedding with Portrayable Photography

Planning a wedding in Florida sounds dreamy. Palm trees. Golden sunsets. Waterfront views. Maybe even fireworks in the distance.

But Florida is not a normal state when it comes to weddings. The weather, the heat, the storms, and even the time change can completely affect your day if you are not prepared.

After photographing weddings all over Central Florida, I have seen what works and what couples wish they had done differently. So here are the biggest mistakes couples make when planning a Florida wedding and how you can avoid them.

1. Not Checking the Actual Sunset Time

This is the biggest one.

Couples pick a ceremony time because it “sounds right” without actually checking what time the sun sets on their specific date.

Sunset in Florida changes drastically throughout the year.

In June, sunset can be around 8:15 pm.
In December, it can be around 5:30 pm.

And when daylight saving time changes, that can shift everything by a full hour.

If you want golden sunset portraits, your ceremony needs to end at least 30 to 45 minutes before sunset. Not at sunset. Before it.

If your ceremony ends after the sun is down, there is no golden glow to work with. It gets dark fast here.

Always check sunset time for your exact wedding date and build your timeline around that.

2. Booking a 2 PM Outdoor Ceremony in July

I say this with love.

A 2 pm outdoor ceremony in July in Florida is brave.

Summer weddings here mean:

  • High humidity
  • Feels like temperatures over 100 degrees
  • Guests sweating before they even sit down

And the lighting at 2 pm is harsh, bright, and directly overhead. Not flattering. Not romantic.

If you are getting married in the summer, consider:

  • Later ceremony times
  • Indoor ceremony spaces
  • Providing shade, fans, and water

Your guests and your photos will thank you.

3. Forgetting About Afternoon Summer Storms

Florida summers are famous for afternoon rain storms.

From about June through September, it is extremely common for storms to roll in between 3 pm and 6 pm. Sometimes they last 20 minutes. Sometimes they linger.

That does not mean you should panic.

It does mean you should:

  • Have a rain backup plan
  • Make sure your venue has indoor options
  • Build flexibility into your timeline

Some of my favorite wedding portraits have happened right after a summer storm when the sky clears and everything looks fresh and dramatic.

But planning for it is key.

4. Ignoring Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in Florida runs from June 1 through November 30.

Most weddings are completely fine. But occasionally, a tropical storm or hurricane will affect travel, flights, or your venue.

If you are planning a fall wedding, especially in September or October, consider:

  • Wedding insurance
  • Flexible travel plans for guests
  • Backup indoor ceremony options

It is not about fear. It is about being prepared and calm if something shifts.

5. Not Thinking About Guest Comfort

Florida heat is no joke.

If you are planning:

  • An outdoor ceremony
  • A beach wedding
  • A garden venue

Think about your guests.

Provide:

  • Cold water
  • Programs that double as fans
  • Shade if possible
  • Shorter ceremony times

Happy guests equal better energy for your reception.

6. Not Hiring Vendors Who Understand Florida

Florida weddings are different.

The lighting is different. The weather patterns are different. The timelines need to be adjusted differently.

Hiring vendors who have worked multiple weddings in Central Florida means:

  • They know how fast storms move
  • They know how early it gets dark in winter
  • They know how to pivot when it is 95 degrees at 10 am

Experience here matters.

7. Cramming Too Much Into the Timeline

Because Florida weather can be unpredictable, your timeline needs breathing room.

If your schedule is packed down to the minute, one rain delay can throw everything off.

Build in:

  • Buffer time
  • Extra portrait time
  • Flexibility before sunset

A relaxed timeline makes for relaxed photos.

8. Assuming “It Will Cool Off”

I hear this a lot for spring and fall weddings.

“It will cool off by then.”

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it does not.

October can still feel like summer here. Even March can surprise you.

Check historical averages for your wedding month and plan realistically instead of optimistically.

9. Skipping a First Look Without Considering the Light

If your ceremony is at 5:30 pm in December and sunset is at 5:35 pm, you will not have daylight after your ceremony.

That means:

  • Family photos in the dark
  • Couple portraits at night

A first look earlier in the day can give you soft, beautiful light and more time together.

It is not about tradition. It is about what works best for your date and lighting.

10. Not Trusting the Professionals

Hiring an outside photographer for your Disney wedding ensures candid moments, like the couple stealing a quiet, magical kiss amidst the beauty of the theme park.

You do not have to figure this all out alone.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is couples trying to piece together a timeline based on what worked for a friend in another state.

Florida is its own world when it comes to weddings.

When you hire experienced vendors who photograph and plan weddings here regularly, you get:

  • Guidance on ceremony timing
  • Advice on weather patterns
  • Backup plans that feel seamless
  • Confidence on your wedding day

And that confidence shows in your photos.
