Tips for Photographing a Toddler

I’m always up for a challenge, and photographing a maternity session with a toddler in the mix? That’s the kind of session that keeps me smiling from start to finish! This beautiful sunset shoot at Johns Lake Conservation Area in Orlando, Florida was the perfect blend of golden light, glowing mama vibes, and a toddler who totally stole the show.
Let me tell you—this mama rocked FOUR outfit changes in just two hours! From flowing gowns to bump-hugging dresses, each look brought a totally different vibe to the session, and she made every one of them look effortless. It was like a maternity fashion show in the middle of the woods (and I was here for it!).
Now, I know what you’re probably thinking… How did we manage four outfit changes with a toddler along for the ride?!The secret sauce? A little creativity, a lot of fun games, and keeping things light and fun. We played games, explored the trails, and let big sibling energy shine. This little one was SO into being part of the session—whether it was running through the tall grass or giving baby bump kisses, we made sure they felt like the star too.
Johns Lake Conservation Area is such a hidden gem—wide open fields, dreamy light through the trees, and those quiet moments that just feel peaceful. It gave us so much space to move around and kept our curious toddler entertained, which is always a win in my book.
These are the kinds of sessions I absolutely love—real families, real joy, and a whole lot of laughter in between the posed shots. If you’re in the Orlando area and planning a maternity session with a toddler (or two or three!), don’t stress. I’ve got you. We’ll make it fun, relaxed, and full of those in-between moments you’ll cherish forever.
Tips & Tricks to Keep Toddlers Happy During Your Orlando Maternity Photoshoot
Planning a maternity session with a toddler in tow? You’re not alone! As an experienced Orlando maternity photographer, I’ve worked with tons of growing families, and I know toddlers bring the energy (and the unpredictability!). But don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to keep things fun and stress-free.
Here are my top tips to make your Orlando maternity photoshoot with a toddler a total success:
1. Bring Snacks (Lots of Them!)
Toddlers are much happier when they’re not hangry. Think easy, non-messy snacks like fruit snacks, crackers, or mini cookies. Bonus tip: pack their favorites and save them for “photo-time only” so they feel special! Also avoid crazy food colors that might stain a shirt or their faces

2. Make It a Game
As a photographer in Orlando who works with young kids all the time, I love turning photo prompts into games. Think “run to mommy and give her a big hug!” or “play red light green light” Making it playful helps toddlers stay engaged—and we capture those natural smiles in the process.
The picture below is what I was capturing all while playing hide and seek with the 3 year old during this maternity session in Orlando.

3. Don’t Bring a Favorite Toy unless that Looks Cute in Photos!
If your toddler has a comfort item or toy they love, bring it along! A favorite stuffed animal or small toy can make them feel at ease and might even sneak into a few sweet shots. But getting them to give it up could be tough.
4. Let Them Explore
Locations like Johns Lake Conservation Area (a favorite spot for Orlando maternity shoots) are perfect because there’s room to roam. We’ll take breaks to let your toddler wander and play—those candid moments are often the most magical!

5. Involve Them in the Session
Toddlers love to feel important. I’ll gently guide them to kiss mommy’s belly, talk to the baby, or “help” pose for a family photo. Or even toss mommy’s dress in the air. When they feel like they have a job, they’re more likely to cooperate.

6. Keep Expectations Realistic
We’re capturing a season of life—and life with toddlers is beautifully imperfect. If your little one isn’t into smiling for the camera, that’s okay! Some of the best moments come from snuggles, giggles, and even a few silly outtakes.

7. Schedule Around Their Best Time of Day
Most toddlers do best in the morning or just after a nap. While golden hour is dreamy for light, I always help families find a balance between lighting and toddler happiness during Orlando family photo sessions.

Including your toddler in your maternity photography session in Orlando is such a sweet way to document your growing family. Whether they’re stealing the spotlight or just along for the ride, I promise we’ll capture all the love, laughs, and little moments in between.
